Koufonisia

Koufonisia consist of two islands, Ano and Kato Koufonisi, and belong to the complex of Small East Cyclades. They are separated by a narrow strait of width of 200 meters. Geographically, you encounter them 3 miles southeast of Naxos and west of Amorgos. They belong to the homonymous community, which includes, besides the two Koufonisia and Keros island and several smaller islands surrounding the main islands. Keros is inseparably linked with their name, is a small uninhabited island, 15.2 sq. Km, but hosts important findings of the Cycladic civilization..

The Koufonisia Community is one of the eleven communities of the Cyclades refecture and includes the two Koufonisia, Keros and nine other smaller islets scattered around the larger islands. The community has a population of 366 inhabitants and an area of 26 square kilometers. The largest island community is Keros while the only inhabited is the Ano Koufonisi which is the headquarters of the community. Since 2011 the Community Koufonisia as separate degree of local government was abolished and since then a Municipal Section of the Municipality of Naxos and Small Cyclades.

Chora is the only village on Koufonissi (Ano Koufonisi) and is built on the southwest side, above the picturesque small harbor. East of the port begins the main street of the island,
which leads to accommodation and the beaches. The car or the engine is not at all necessary in Koufonisia since there are no paved roads, and all paths are small and can be covered on foot, by boat to the beaches and bike rented in the island. Many boats run regularly, especially during summer to the beaches of Koufonisi and Kato Koufonisi.
